She’s absolutely beloved by her crew and a legend on the high seas. Fast forward… she is older, wiser, and the captain of her own pirate ship. They’re the good pirates, the ones her dad trusted. Her life completely changes and she starts living with pirates. This is where I’m going to gloss over some details because I don’t want to give too much away, but let’s say lots of crazy stuff goes down. It’s like a movie where everything is wonderful and touching and you just know it won’t last.
It’s a wonderful reunion full of banter and play fighting. EBennett escapes the meeting with her would be fiancé, steals said fiancé’s horse (nice touch!), and trots off to find her dad. That someone is Lord Grisdale, a 44-YEAR-OLD WIDOWER. Bennett’s mom thinks it’s best to marry her off to someone who can take care of her. They eventually found a nice place to live with cousins, but at any moment that could end. Her mom was forced from her own home when she was pregnant with Bennett, and all alone and poor. Her mom wants to marry Bennett off to a MUCH older man. Her parents live apart poor Bennett rarely sees her dad and she has a strained relationship with her mom. Her mom is of noble blood and her dad is a dastardly pirate with a heart of gold for his daughter. She has a very sad family history that opens the story. We first meet Bennett when she is fourteen years old. Sea of Ruin is about a badass female pirate, Bennett Sharp. I picked the book up again last week and I’m here to tell you, ladies…I AM a pirate girl. I just didn’t see myself as a pirate girl. Part of my reluctance was because it’s a pirate romance. I was busy and had so many other books on my TBR list, so I never got around to this one. The first book assigned was Sea of Ruin by Pam Godwin. I’m such an avid reader, yet I never joined a book club until this summer.
